Easter Basket Ideas That Are Fun, Useful & Totally Exciting

I’m going to say something slightly controversial… Easter baskets do not need to be filled with tiny toys that break by Tuesday.
When I was little, my basket always had summer items and games — and I loved it. It felt exciting and practical at the same time. Especially for kids with fall and winter birthdays, spring is the perfect moment to refresh all the warm-weather gear they’re about to need anyway.
If your house is anything like ours, you already have plenty of toys. So why not make Easter feel fun and useful?

First — The Basket Itself
We actually reuse the same Easter baskets year after year. It’s simple, sustainable, and honestly the kids love seeing “their” basket come back each spring. It becomes part of the tradition.
That said… if you’re starting fresh or just want something extra cute, there are so many sweet options out right now — woven rattan baskets, pastel canvas totes, personalized name baskets, even rope storage bins that can double as room décor the rest of the year.
If you’re buying one, I always suggest picking something neutral enough to reuse, sturdy enough to last, and big enough to hold summer gear. Think long-term, not one-and-done.
The “Hello, Summer!” Basket
This is my go-to theme. It builds excitement for warm weather and feels fresh. These are things you’re probably buying soon anyway — putting them in a basket makes it feel magical instead of like a Target run.
Links for Ideas to include:
· A bright new bathing suit: Baby’s Bathing Suit – Girls Suit – Boys Suit
· A fun sun hat Kid-sized – Baseball Hat
· sunglasses or Wrap Sunglasses
· New Crocs – Native shoes – colorful flip flops – Little Kid Flip Flops
· Goggles (a must for pool season)
· A personalized beach towel — bonus: doubles for camp days!
· A collapsible beach bucket (so much easier to store!)

Plush, But Make It Trendy
Yes, stuffed bunnies are adorable. They’ll always have a place. But if you want something a little different this year… have you noticed how obsessed kids are with axolotls lately? A soft stuffed axolotl is such a fun twist — and feels extra special.
Unexpected = memorable.
Creative Add-Ons (That Aren’t Junk)
If you know me, you know I love slipping in something creative. Here are a few links of our favorites that go beyond the usual candy haul:
· A fresh pack of OOLY markers — the colors are seriously so good
· Stickers
· Bracelet kits for Littles & Slightly older
· The Easter Activity Book from R&L Creative Activities — inside you’ll find: coloring pages, games, & writing practice sheets, perfect for ages 3 – 8. It keeps the excitement going all weekend long and gives kids something fun to dive into beyond the candy rush.
Build Your Basket by Age Links:
Toddlers (ages 1–3): Keep it simple — sun hat Kid-sized – Baseball Hat, a beach bucket, Sidewalk chalk , and Adorable Axolotl Link are perfect.
Little Kids (ages 4–7): This is the sweet spot for the Hello Summer basket — Baby’s Bathing Suit – Girls Suit – Boys Suit, Goggles, colorful flip flops – Little Kid Flip Flops, OOLY markers, and the activity book.
Tweens (ages 8–12): Think bigger — roller blades, a new backpack, a beach towel , or a sports net for the yard. They still love a basket moment, even if they won’t admit it.
Big Surprise Years
Some years call for a bigger reveal. If your child needs one anyway, Easter is such a fun time to gift a new bike and helmet, roller blades, a scooter, or even a sports net for the yard. It kicks off spring in the best way possible and feels like a true season opener.
Planning a Spring or Summer Trip?
If you have travel coming up, Easter is the perfect excuse to gift a new kid-sized suitcase, a fun backpack, travel games, or a neck pillow. You’re buying it anyway — might as well make it part of the magic.
Don’t Forget the Finishing Touches
Here’s a little tip — skip the Easter grass and tissue paper. It ends up everywhere and gets thrown away by the end of the day anyway. Instead, fill those extra spaces in the basket with small useful items that will actually get used!
Here are some of our favorite practical filler ideas:
· Small sunscreen — they’ll need it all summer anyway
· Travel-sized bug spray — perfect for slipping into a bag or backpack
· Hair ties — always disappearing,
· A Touchland hand sanitizer — kids absolutely love these! They’re practical, pretty, and fit perfectly in a Crocs charm holder for the cutest little accessory
· A little wallet or coin purse — great for older kids
· A reusable snack bag or pouch — useful all spring and summer long
No waste, no cleanup, and everything in the basket actually gets used. That’s a win all around..
Keeping It Special Without Overdoing It
Here’s the truth: we have plenty of toys and activities in our house already. I still want Easter to feel exciting and magical — but I don’t want more clutter.
That’s why I love filling baskets with things they need, things we’d be buying soon anyway, one or two creative surprises, and something cuddly. It feels thoughtful. It feels intentional. And it still feels like Easter morning magic — without adding more stuff you’ll be tripping over in July.
Save this post so you don’t lose it, and drop your basket theme in the comments below — I’d love to hear what you’re putting together this year!
